I was never REALLY a fan of them when I was younger because for me they were just an awkward length, but in all actuality....they're kinda cool, versatile & chic....now that I'm more mature and older. They work for a tall woman such as myself and also give you a more professional feel!
They are the HAPPY median between college & the real world! As you grow in college you are blossoming in today a young woman, so the SHORT shorts may not be for you anymore, so transitioning to the longer length may be better and also prepare you to transition into "adulthood" where people look at you funny if your clothes are too short, tight or risky! #ShameOnTHEM ;-)
For men...they are sexy and show off the beautiful skin that men tend to hide in their year round pants, while also creating definition in the muscular calf ;-) With a man...the key is finding a comfortable fit that is not too big or too small, but just right!
