BEAT DOWN: Makeup Artist Johnatha Camp

TKHC: Tell me about Johnatha Camp, Professional Makeup Artist:
I am a native of Charlotte, NC and for a short while, I attended Virginia State University on Volleyball Scholarship and transferred to UNCCharlotte.  My gifts are painting, sketching, interior decor--the arts!!  I simply love the arts and what it does for me.    I am also an emerging event designer whose created the vision for various events such as music videos, business events, and major fashion events in Charlotte, NC.   Lastly, but most importantly, I'm a faithful wife to a wonderful husband and four outstanding children.

TKHC: What is J. Camp Makeup Artistry all about and how did it get started?
My artistry is all about glamour and fabulosity!  In my career, I want every woman to know that makeup just accentuates their features and those features are their natural features.
J.Camp Makeup Artistry got started in the beginning of 2012, but it was in its growing stages in May 2010 when I met and was trained under a local celebrity makeup artist.  She hired me the first day and fine tuned my skills which caused my career to explode in this industry-that was a game changer! It seemed like when I started doing gigs, it just snowballed and it hasn't stopped or slowed down...I'm grateful for that!!  I knew I had a gift that could turn into a successful career and I wanted to be a entrepreneur, doing what I absolutely love. I received so many requests to do makeup and  I had to make this a career of mine because I was good at it.  So I made that decision to launch J. Camp Makeup Artistry and it has been on one of the best decisions I've ever made.

TKHC:  Do you have any physical locations? If not, do you plan to have any? If so, where and is there a time frame you have in mind for its launching?
No I do not have any studios but I do travel to my clients location.  Yes, I do plan to having a location and I look forward to launching its grand opening this year...it's going to be a HUGE celebration!

TKHC:  Have you had any shows to display your makeup artistry? If so, when is the next one? If not, are you planning any?
Yes, I have a plethora of shows that my work has been displayed from Atlanta Fashion Week , a movie, commercials, FOX News, etc.  You name it and I my work was probably there!  Yes I am planning for another show which will definitely be a big hit here in the Queen City and in London!

TKHC:   Who is your favorite makeup artist and why?
My favorite makeup artist is Sam Fine.  Sam Fine has been in the industry for years and the way he applies makeup is phenomenal! He can take a face from good to great!

TKHC:   How do you primarily advertise and how effective is this method for you?
My method of advertising has been networking events, social media such as Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram--social media has definitely been good to me!  Everytime I've had a show or a client, I will post the photos and people respond by requesting my services.  Word of mouth has played a huge role in advertising my business and thrusting it forward.  I will eventually hire a PR/Branding company to do the foot work for me.  Alot of people are shocked that I don't have a agency representing me with all the success I have attained.

TKHC:   What are your goals within 2013 for your business?
My goals for 2013 are more media gigs such as magazines, tv shows, reality shows, high profile talents, and taking it worldwide.  I am definitely going to the UK this year so that's one of the many goals I am so elated about!  During mid Spring/Summer of 2012, I met my business partner, Sharon Hughes,  to collaborate for a project that will launch this year in London!  She worked in Fashion Marketing at Instyle Magazine UK and is now back in the states with her company, GEMF(Global Enterprise Models) which is a fashion marketing and management resource, business center and consulting firm for modern, talented, distinctive emerging fashion brands and retailers (e-tailers).   We both have the same goal of our lives being inspiring, educating, and empowering, especially the lives of black women.  We are the L.A.B.Gals which stands for lifestyles, art, and beauty.  We will focus on hair, makeup, style, fitness, finance, and health. This is HUGE and so motivating!! I am so elated to be apart of this huge movement we are starting and seeing the lives impacted one at a time!

TKHC:  What do you enjoy most about the makeup artistry industry?
I love to see the client's look on their face when they see the finished look!  It warms my heart to see those ladies feel good about themselves and they start dancing as they're looking in the mirror!  To witness their self-image and confidence grow right before my eyes is priceless.  The transformation process is a delight and it's never grows old with me....never!  Also, I enjoy the "new looks" being promoted in artistry because it's something refreshing and out of the box.

Lastly, I am thankful for the teachings, opportunities, and experiences I have in this fashion/beauty industry.  The support is magnificent and I'm glad to see the perception of makeup in a positive light.
